Historian Pete Strong launches his new book at the Westgate. Although John Frost was very

much a man of Newport, he lived out his days in Bristol after his return in 1856 from his exile in

Tasmania, and was buried in the city in Horfield parish churchyard. His wife and children had

moved there just after he was transported, settling first in Montpelier and finally in Stapleton.

Bristol at that time was by far the biggest urban settlement in south Wales and the west of

England, and there were many cultural, commercial and political links between Newport and its

larger neighbour across the Severn. The new book, The Bristol Connection, explores the

connections between Chartism in Newport and Bristol both before and after the Newport Rising,

particularly through the example of the Frost family.
