About the Event

Wednesday,   12th June 19.00  Norena Shopland, author Women in Welsh Coal Mining: Tip Girls at Work in a Men's World

Find out what happened to the Tip Girls who fought for over a hundred years to keep their jobs and reputations.  Society was horrified that women were working in such a dirty industrial environment, close to men,  and  Parliament  decided it was their responsibility to 'save' these women.  Tip Girls had other ideas and eventually marched on Westminster appealing to be left alone.  New research from census returns and newspaper accounts has uncovered over 1,500 named women who worked in the Welsh coalfields.

Tickets Free/Pay What You Want - all proceeds to registered charity Our Chartist Heritage (1176673) and used to fund Newport Rising Festival and education programmes.
