About the Event
Dominic Hames will be giving a history at the Hub talk on the Redevelopment of Pill from 1962 to 1974.
This talk looks at the redevelopment of Pill over the broad period of 1962 to 1974. It considers the poor post-war state of housing, and the reasons why Newport lagged other authorities at this time in providing houses fit for its growing population.
With the government of the day determined to knock down and replace what commonly became known as slum properties, this talk outlines why Pill was to become the centre of redevelopment in Newport and the decision-making process that resulted in good quality houses being demolished to be replaced by houses that were little better, if not worse. This talk also outlines why Baneswell was mainly saved from redevelopment, despite being designated a development area.

Bydd Dominic Hames yn rhoi hanes yn sgwrs yr Hyb ar Ailddatblygu Pilsen o 1962 i 1974.
Mae'r sgwrs hon yn edrych ar ailddatblygu Pill dros y cyfnod eang o 1962 i 1974.
Gyda llywodraeth y dydd yn benderfynol o ddymchwel a disodli'r hyn a elwir yn gyffredin yn eiddo slymiau, mae'r sgwrs hon yn amlinellu pam roedd Pill i ddod yn ganolfan ailddatblygu yng Nghasnewydd a'r broses o wneud penderfyniadau a arweiniodd at ddymchwel tai o ansawdd da i gael eu disodli gan dai nad oedd fawr gwell, os nad gwaeth. Mae'r sgwrs hon hefyd yn amlinellu pam y cafodd Baneswell ei harbed yn bennaf rhag ailddatblygu, er gwaethaf cael ei ddynodi'n ardal ddatblygu.
