In today’s era of supposed equal opportunity, how much power and influence is still passed down through generations of Britain’s traditional elite families? To what extent do those born into wealth and privilege continue to monopolise the country’s most senior positions?

In the first Chartist Legacy Lecture, renowned sociologist and author Prof. Sam Friedman will reveal new research on how the old elite reproduce themselves across the years – and how this may be distorting our modern democracy. (The lecture will be followed by an open forum on the key issues raised by Prof. Friedman’s research.)

Sam Friedman is Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science and co-author of the books Born to Rule; The Making and Remaking of the British Elite and the Class Ceiling; Why it Pays to be Privileged. He is co-editor of the British Journal of Sociology.
